You'd be surprised to learn that anything about insurance could be fun. But in this case, there is. Neighbors Helping Neighbors is the name of an exhibit I designed for the Frankenmuth Historical Museum that focused on the local insurance company, Frankenmuth Mutual Insurance. Displayed March - May 2023, it features a tornado photo op, a hilarious story about using a coffin as a filing cabinet, 1 touchable interactive, and a spinning mini tornado displayed next to looped news footage.
My role in this exhibit was all encompassing. From initial research to panel design to construction and installation, I was involved with all stages of this exhibit's creation. I utilized the digital archive FHA uses (Past Perfect) to ferret out interesting stories, and from there chose the narratives of this exhibit. In collaboration with my boss, the director of exhibits, I chose the artifacts and then drafted and refined the informational panels. Due to time constraints, I was only personally responsible for about half of the prop construction and installation.
The text panels for this exhibit have a grey, green, and white color scheme, and are mostly landscape oriented. The larger panels on the left were printed at 40"x60", while the smaller ones on the right were printed at 24"x36". I took inspiration from local architecture where I could in my illustration, and had the tornado panel proof read by a meteorologist relative.
Ideation for this exhibit went from a list of possible artifacts to hand drawn layouts and later into a SketchUp 3D model. Though we didn't end up being able to use it all, we hit most of the high points in real life.
