My summer internship with Kids N Stuff Children's Museum in Albion, Michigan culminated in the creation and execution of Summer Break Programming every day they were open of the week of Independence Day. I created 1 hour long programs themed around quintessential summer topics, including fireworks, ice cream, flowers, and summer camps. These programs built off previous programming events for holiday and spring breaks and created a precedence for more comprehensive programming in future summers.
The Fireworks program for 4th of July involved a paint popper firework craft and using food coloring and clear soda and mentos to explode a safe firework together. The educational content focused on how fireworks function and the chemistry of colored sparkles in the night sky.
The Ice Cream Chemistry was our biggest hit. We talked about physical and chemical changes, how hand making ice cream was different from factories making it, and used beakers, graduated cylinders, and pipettes to measure our ingredients.
Shared with permissions, this is the final document I created for the programs. It has official program descriptions and my intended educational connections as well as material lists and step by step instructions on program delivery. Check out the whole document here.
